The Galapagos Isles

The Galapagos Isles form one of the most diverse and complex archipelagos in the world, both geologically and biologically, and it is undoubtably one of the most important scientific and natural treasures in the world. Due to its complete isolation, the flora and fauna have evolved incredibly into the species that they are today, the majority of which can be found nowhere else in the world. These species have existed and evolved for thousands of years without natural predators, showing no fear in the presence of humans and other animals. This is one of the reasons that the Galapagos Isles is such a special place for scientists, tourists, and photographers; however, it is also the cause of its delicate fragility and significant need for conservation.

Galapagos Facts

Located in the eastern Pacific Ocean off the west coast of South America, the Galapagos Isles Archipelago consists of 18 islands (15 main islands and 3 smaller islands) and 107 rocks and islets.  The isles straddle the equator, and islands in the archipelago can be found both in the northern and southern hemisphere.  The Republic of Ecuador annexed the Galapagos on Febuary 12, 1832, renaming them “The Archipelago of Ecuador”, and later “The Archipelago of Colón” in honor of Cristopher Columbus, which remains the official name today. These names were merely additions to a list of several that have been given to the Islands, yet the most common is still the traditional name Galapagos.
